Behind the Music: Señor Jack

What is Señor Jack all about?

Señor Jack is the most Spanish sounding song on the Mariana’s Café Ep, however the name was inspired by a Netflix series, set thousands of miles away…

The series in question is Virgin River. Now I’m not usually one for romantic-dramas, but when I saw the trailer, featuring beautiful scenery and music, I felt a strange draw to watch it. My wife loves a good romance story, so she didn’t need any persuading!

The basic plot

The series itself largely revolves around two central characters; Mel, a nurse who has just moved from the city to the remote town of Virgin River (and needless to say is hiding a dark / traumatic past) and Jack, a charming war veteran who now runs the town’s main bar.

The guy that knows everyone…

Jack is one of the most charismatic characters in the series. In a town where everyone knows everyone, his bar is the central focus for all social activity and he’s the one that everyone shares their story's with.

And because he’s such a great guy, he invariably helps them out and comes to their rescue, even at the expense of his own needs – what a guy!

Señor Jack

First, why not press play on Señor Jack and listen to the song as you read the story behind the music (you'll need to log in to Spotify and refresh this page to hear the whole song though)?

And let's now transport ourselves to a beautiful coastal fishing village in Spain.

Picture our character Jack, a guy who is known and loved by everyone in our picturesque village.

Señor Jack's Narrow Steet

But Jack isn’t perfect, none of us are after all

Imagine he’s having some personal issues and just needs to get away for a bit. So he strides down through the narrow village streets to his small boat, Mariana, moored at the harbour.

As he makes his way there, his fellow villagers smile and acknowledge him – although he’s not in the mood to stop and chat – unusual for Jack. But the other villagers shrug and assume everyone needs time to themselves every now and again, so they go about their days and don’t bother our enigmatic hero.

He takes his boat out to sea. To get away. To spend some time with just his thoughts.

Every trip needs a return at some point

So when he eventually returns (in a timely manner of course, Jack isn’t the type of guy to be out drinking whiskey to all hours – although it is his favourite drink and has had a couple if truth be told), Mariana, his wife is waiting for him.

Waiting in the very spot where they met for the first time.

His time out has allowed him to reconcile his thoughts and he knows and appreciates how lucky he really is.

Our Jack out at sea

As they stroll back towards home, they pass a bandstand in the village square and hear the live music playing.

Of course Jack and Mariana are consummate dancers, and as they pass through the square, they can’t help themselves but to stop and sway to the band.

The other villagers are of course all out dancing as well – but everyone is having their own private moment after a busy day. That’s how life is in our idyllic Spanish coastal village!

For Jack and Mariana, they’re together in that moment.

And that folks, was the inspiration and meaning behind Señor Jack.
